Building Access

The computer science building (Universitätsstraße 38) is open around the clock, including nights and weekends, for students whose student card is activated for it. Access runs entirely through the electronic student card (ecus).

Access is not managed by us (FIUS) but by the access control team (Zugangskontrolle) of the computer science department. This page is only here to help you make sense of it all.

Who Gets Access

• Students in computer science degree programmes with an account in the central pools (GS-Pool, HS-Pool) automatically have access to the computer science building, the GS-Pool, the HS-Pool and the work rooms 0.008, 0.114 and 0.252 with their ecus. There is no extra application, the pool account is enough.
• Access to other rooms (labs, pool rooms of individual departments) is granted by the department running the course or coursework you need the room for.
• Business informatics students without an ecus can get an access card from the Studiensekretariat of the University of Hohenheim.

On the same principle, students can also be granted access with their ecus to pool rooms, labs and so on in other buildings: Pfaffenwaldring 5a (VIS/MCI), Pfaffenwaldring 5b (FZI), VISUS (Allmandring 19) and the rooms of the ITI (Pfaffenwaldring 47). When Access Doesn’t Work

• Red light blinks: the card has not been coded yet, or you have no permission for that particular door.
• Green light blinks but the door won’t open: access was granted. Some doors need to be pulled towards you first and then pushed open. If that doesn’t help, the door has probably been locked with a key as well (e.g. by the cleaning staff) — in that case usually only a staff member of the responsible department can help.
• Kiosk terminal shows “Fehler”: the card has already been coded, or there is no data for it. Try again and hold the card still. If it has never been coded, you may not be enrolled. (The kiosk terminal should no longer be relevant for newer cards.)
• No reaction at all at the kiosk terminal or the card reader: the card is probably faulty. You can get a new one from the Studiensekretariat.

Include which door it is, what the card reader shows, and which degree programme you are in.

Your Responsibility

24/7 access is a privilege, not a given. It depends on everyone sticking to a few rules:

• Don’t let anyone in. Anyone without their own access does not get into the building. That includes people who forgot their card, and it includes your friends.
• Use only the north door as an exit (towards Campus Beach). The side doors are alarm-secured and must not be used as exits. Even pressing the handle triggers the alarm, and security has to come out at night to reset it.
• Never hold doors open. No stones, chairs or other objects in the door, not even “just for a second”. When you step outside, let the door close behind you.
• Be fair to the security staff. They are doing their job and making sure the building can stay open at all.

This is a live issue right now: people without their own access keep turning up in the building at night and on weekends, doors get blocked, and there have been conflicts with the security staff. If that doesn’t change, the department will have to withdraw building access for students. The building would then only be open Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and everyone would have to leave at 7 p.m.

In short: if you want to study here at night, help keep it that way for next semester.
